What We Do

Our Mission

The Center for Humane Sexual Culture works with the public to ensure access to sexuality information of all kinds.

Goals

Lack of access to sexuality information–and the power of sexual shame–prevent Americans from making informed ethical choices about sexuality. This is an impediment to freedom in almost every aspect of life and so we work for an American culture which respects individuals’ needs to freely inquire, discuss, and debate sexual issues.

How we choose solutions

The Center for Humane Sexual Culture is best understood as a platform from which we launch our initiatives. We add projects as staffing allows, always acknowledging that there are always more fronts in this war: cultural, political, social, religious, anthropological, academic, and so on. We always look for new projects which also work against interrelated axes of oppression: race, ethnicity, poverty, nationality, gender, sex, sexual orientation, ability and more.

Current projects

  • Make It Visible Campaign

Our first project comes in two parts, both designed to make the unseen problem of sexual shame visible. The Make It Visible Campaign does two things:
First, we collect real stories from people across the Internet to document the pain sexual shame has caused, and share those stories with the world. We accept and solicit stories in a variety of formats and lengths to keep all audiences engaged.
Second, by writing letters to the editor, submitting op-ed pieces, and critiquing media stories on the CHSC blog, our members challenge representations in the media that foster sexual shame and sex negativity. Most importantly, we encourage others to assert their power to shape the media, not just consume it. We also write letters of praise and thanks when reporters, editors, and producers.
